Intercultural Competences for VET teachers and staff

IC4VET

Within the framework of the Erasmus project ‘IC4VET’, ALFMED collaborates with 7 European partners to develop continuing education modules focused on intercultural competences:

  • Dedicated to teachers : to acquire intercultural competences
  • Dedicated to students : two ECVET learning outcome units used for the intercultural preparation of students participating in Erasmus mobility projects

Vocational schools in Germany are increasingly teaching young people with a migrant or different cultural background. The training personnel have specialist, didactic and diagnostic skills that they acquired during their studies and were able to deepen and expand them in practice.

But teaching young people/apprentices with poor German language skills makes it difficult to use those teaching tools and methods. Teaching processes have to change and be adapted. Teachers have to be prepared to deal with these intercultural challenges of everyday school life.

Two German vocational schools are involved in the project and they contribute to determine the needs occurred in their schools. One teacher from each of the participating schools will be involved in the development of the planned continuing education modules to teach intercultural competences. They will actively participate in the pilot phase. The participating teachers will then be enabled by this European project to integrate these education modules into the everyday life of vocational schools after the end of the project.

The survey of teachers from three other German vocational schools in Münster, Magdeburg, and Stendal showed also that the need for a training in intercultural competences exists. No intercultural knowledge is imparted within the framework of their studies and state further training for teachers on the subject is offered. These schools also will profit from the results of the project and are interested in the continuing education modules.

There are 3 projects our German partner found in the Erasmus+ Project Results database that have worked on/developed intercultural themes/learning content within their projects, but they focus on trainers / not teachers
(Sources: Education server of the Länder, KursNET of the Agentur für Arbeit)

The targets of our IC4VET Project are:
1. further training of educational staff at vocational schools
2. development of four training modules -themes on intercultural competences
3. description of two ECVET learning outcome units for intercultural preparation of participants
4. extension of the German applicant’s European network by the integration of two new project partners (Sweden, Denmark)

We aim to reach the following target groups with the project:
Staff and teachers of the project partners, as well as the institutions themselves
– School/college teachers additionally involved in the partner countries during the pilot phase
– the project partners, who will benefit, among other things, from the extension and consolidation of the partnership and who will broaden their European network
Students/trainees of the participating institutions

Our project partners from Germany, Malta, Sweden, Denmark, Ireland and Finland have experience in dealing with pupils, students and professionals from different cultures and partly carry out intercultural seminars themselves. The practical experience of our group of partners is important for the development of the training modules. The learning contents already used by them for intercultural preparation will be incorporated into their own Training modules. The cooperation in the project itself already promotes the intercultural competences of the participating persons of the project partners.

Between the analysis phase and the pilot phase, the 7 project partners will meet in each partner country for coordination and evaluation of our work.

In addition to the four continuing education modules and the ECVET learning outcomes units, a concept for implementing the continuing education modules in the everyday life of a vocational school will also be developed.
